# Selling by auction

> Publish capacity for competitive bidding, open a lot, set its terms, and see what a closing lot produces.

A seller can sell capacity two ways: at a price you publish, or by competition. Selling by competition means putting the capacity up as a **lot** with a closing time and letting buyers bid.

A closing lot does not put the platform between you and the winner. It produces an **introduction** — the same record accepting an opportunity produces — after which you contract with the winner directly and owe the usual 1% success fee on what you receive. GPU Outlet takes no money from either side of your deal.

## Choose it when you publish

How the capacity is sold is answered in the **Pricing** step of the publish form, under **How buyers take it**.

| Option | What it means for buyers |
| - | - |
| **Reserve at a fixed price** | You name the rate. A buyer asks for an introduction and settles at it. |
| **Sell by auction** | Bids compete above your floor. You open the lot after publishing. |

The answer is fixed at publication and cannot be edited afterwards. An auction promises a closing time to everybody bidding, and a seller free to switch back to a fixed price could withdraw that promise after people had acted on it — as an edit, which nothing announces. To sell the same capacity the other way, delist it and publish it again.

**My Listings** shows the answer on each card, as **Sold as**.

See [Listings](/selling/listings) for the rest of the form.

## Open a lot

A lot is built from a listing you have already published. Open **Lots** (`/app/auctions`) and press **Put capacity up for bidding**, or go to `/app/auctions/new`.

Only an **Owner** or an **Authorized signatory** can open a lot: it commits the company to supplying what it sells. It is the same permission as publishing the capacity, and it does not ask for your second factor.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Pick the capacity">
    The menu lists your published listings with the nodes each has. A listing with no proven right to sell is marked, and a lot cannot be opened on it — it would draw real bids and introduce a buyer to a seller who cannot deliver. Declare the right to sell on the listing first.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the terms">
    Everything below. They are the text bidders accept before they can bid.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Publish the lot">
    It appears on **Lots**, and the listing's Radar card starts showing the auction instead of a rate.
  </Step>
</Steps>

### The lot's terms

| Field | Rule |
| - | - |
| **Format** | **Open** or **Sealed**. Cannot be changed later, on any lot. |
| **Nodes in this lot** | A whole number, 1 or more, and no more than the listing offers. |
| **Reserve** | Optional. Your floor, and it is published to bidders. A bid exactly at it clears. Leave it empty and any bid clears. |
| **Bid step** | Optional. On an open lot the smallest raise over the current best bid; on a sealed lot the granularity bids are quoted in, counted from the reserve. Without it, a cent is enough to outbid somebody. |
| **Bidding opens**, **Bidding closes** | The window. It must be an interval, and it must not have ended already. The close is exclusive and is judged by the server's clock, never a bidder's. |
| **Payment schedule** | Optional prose, shown to bidders. |
| **Your conditions on who may bid** | Optional prose, shown to bidders as part of the terms. Nothing checks it: a condition written here binds a bidder because they accepted the terms containing it, and no system turns away a bidder who fails it. |

A lot is refused if the window makes no sense, if nobody has proven a right to sell the capacity, if the listing states no minimum term — no deal can be sized from capacity with no stated length — or if the lot offers more nodes than the listing holds.

### Open or sealed

The format decides who may see a bid while the lot is running, and nothing else. Both formats take the same bids and are decided by the same comparison.

* **Open**: the current best bid is visible to anyone, and a new bid has to clear it by your step.
* **Sealed**: no bid is visible to anyone until the lot closes — **including you**. Nothing computes a leading amount on a sealed lot before the close, so there is no figure being withheld from your screen. The symmetry is the point: a seller who could watch a sealed lot could bid it up.

## While the lot runs

Your lot's page has two panels of your own.

**Your lot** withdraws it. A lot can be withdrawn until it is decided; after that it has a settlement record and a winner, and withdrawing would be a default dressed as a cancellation.

**Amend** moves the terms — but only while nobody has bid. The moment a bid exists the terms are frozen, and an amendment is refused rather than the bids being invalidated.

| Can be amended | Cannot be amended |
| - | - |
| Reserve, bid step, closing time, payment schedule, your conditions, uptime commitment, provisioning | The format, the opening time, the listing and the seller |

Every amendment raises the lot's terms version, and that invalidates every acceptance of the previous text: bidders must accept the new version before they can bid. Amend early, or not at all.

You are told "New bid on your auction" when bidding moves, and "Your auction closed" when it ends. Neither names a bidder or an amount. Auction notices appear in the dashboard only and are not emailed.

## When it closes

At the closing time the lot is decided: the highest bid that clears your reserve wins, and equal amounts are settled by who bid first. If bids came in and none reached your reserve, the outcome is **Reserve not met** — kept apart from **No bids**, because the two say different things about your next lot.

A win then produces an introduction:

<Steps>
  <Step title="The winner is revealed to you">
    The introduction carries the winner's company and contacts, under the usual terms. It appears under **Opportunities** → **Protected**, with a reference such as `GO-YYYYMMDD-XXXXXX`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="You contact the winner">
    Contracting, invoicing and delivery are between the two companies. See [Seller introductions](/selling/introductions).
  </Step>

  <Step title="You owe the success fee on what you receive">
    1% of every amount you actually receive from that buyer, for contracts signed within 24 months of the reveal. See [Success fee](/selling/success-fee).
  </Step>
</Steps>

You are not asked to accept anything at the close. You accepted in advance and in public: you opened the lot, published its terms and let it run. What is still checked is your own standing — a company whose verification has lapsed, or whose agreement has moved, cannot be introduced to anybody, and the introduction waits until that is fixed.

The lot then shows **Settled**: the introduction was made. That is the last thing the platform performs on a lot.

<Note>
  A lot names no fallback, and nothing offers it to the next bidder by itself. The platform does not observe whether a winner goes through with the deal: it holds none of your money and sees no payment between you and the buyer, so there is nothing that could declare a default. If a winner does not take up the introduction, you can publish the capacity again, or write to [support](/reference/support).
</Note>

## Lot statuses

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Live** | Created. Whether it is taking bids right now is its window against the server's clock. |
| **Decided** | A winner was determined. Nothing has been paid: what the two companies agree is between them. |
| **Settled** | The introduction was made. |
| **Unsold** | Nobody bid, or nobody cleared the reserve. |
| **To be relisted** | It ended and its terms say to run it again. The successor is a new lot, on a date you pick. |
| **Withdrawn** | You withdrew it before it was decided. |
